Details

Give your trip a touch of spirituality by embracing the legacy of the world's oldest religion still active, and the first of Persia: Zoroastrianism. Later spread through Europe with Thus Spoke Zarathustra Friedrich Nietzsche little is truly known about this monotheist belief. In Yazd province, follow a Zoroastrian couple in the most significant monuments to pierce with them the secrets of this religion.

The rocky city of Taft

Start by exploring the surroundings of Taft, near Yazd, a natural Eden at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. Here, noble Zoroastrian families have settled in the middle of pomegranate gardens, a fruit that is a symbol of their faith and is a prominent member in several rituals and celebrations. The ancient architecture of abode houses blends into the mountainous background of Taft. Stroll into the village to discover the biggest "Nakhl" in Iran, a huge wooden Islamic structure, before entering the tranquil Saredeh Fire Temple, the main place of worship for Zoroastrians, where an eternal flame is burning.

Fire Temple and Silence Towers, the most sacred sites

Head toward the thousand years old village of Cham. Located at the gate of the desert, this picturesque village has several sacred sites, among which the Silence Towers: Climb up this ancient necropolis of dried sludge, slowly crumbled by the wind over the years, to have an exceptional view over the valley, wrapped in mystery. Going down to the village, admire the symbol of both Zoroaster the prophet and Cham: an old mystical Cypress of legendary beauty and huge dimensions. This evergreen tree is a symbol of immortality and freedom.

The warm welcome of Zoroastrians

Enjoy some quietness in the dreamlike surroundings of Nartitee guesthouse, a 100 years-old house turned into an eco-lodge. Run by a Zoroastrian couple, you can learn with them how to make "Sirug", a special bread baked for celebrations, and taste local foods. Sharing lunch altogether, you feel like part of the family, in the purest Zoroastrian tradition of hospitality.

Yazd, the merciful refuge for Zoroastrians

Many sacred sites remain in the beautiful desert city of Yazd, such as its famous and well-preserved 1300 years-old Fire Temple with a magnificent token of Fravashi over the entrance. The enthralling Zoroastrian museum offers an incredible insight into this culture, presenting lots of historical objects, and introducing stories of immigration to India. In Yazd, don't miss visiting the rest of its exceptional sites, by wandering in its mud-bricked alleys and enjoying the view from its rooftops. An invitation to contemplate the wisdom of a religion that had imprinted the whole Persian culture until today.
